Terms and your rights
Hominis is free software. You can use it for any purpose, study how it works, share it and change it.
Draft for legal review. The licence and brand-asset statements summarise the Hominis repository’s LICENSE and LICENSE-BRANDING files, which are authoritative.
Your rights
Hominis is published under the European Union Public Licence, version 1.2 (EUPL-1.2). It lets you:
- use Hominis for any purpose, at home or at work;
- get the source code and study how Hominis works (see Source code);
- share copies with others;
- change Hominis and share your changes, under the same licence.
Hominis is built on Firefox, whose code is licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 and other free licences. about:license in Hominis lists every licence that applies to the code it contains.
The Hominis name, logo and mascot
The EUPL covers the code, not the brand. The Hominis name, the pinwheel logo in every monthly colour, and the marten mascot are brand assets of Noduz e.U., with all rights reserved:
- You may redistribute them only as an unmodified part of an official, unmodified Hominis build, to identify that build as Hominis.
- You may build Hominis from source without changes and use that build, with the brand assets, for your own personal or internal use, including inside an organisation. This does not cover publishing your build.
- If you publish or distribute a modified version, first remove the brand assets and give it another name. The source tree includes a neutral branding set, so an unbranded build takes one build option.
- You may not modify or recolour the brand assets, use them on their own apart from the software, or use them in a way that suggests an endorsement or affiliation that doesn’t exist, without written permission.
Firefox is a trademark of the Mozilla Foundation. Hominis is built on Firefox, but it is not made, endorsed or supported by Mozilla.
No warranty
Hominis is provided as it is, without warranty, and to the extent the law allows Noduz e.U. is not liable for damages arising from its use, as set out in articles 7 and 8 of the EUPL-1.2. This does not limit any rights you have under consumer protection law that cannot be excluded.
Services from others
Some features rely on services run by other companies: Mozilla (security lists, extensions, media plugin updates), Cisco (the OpenH264 video codec), Google (Safe Browsing lists, the Widevine module) and, if you add your own key, the AI model provider. Their terms apply to your use of their services. The privacy notice lists each service and what it receives.
AI features
- The AI features are optional and off until you add your own API key.
- Requests are billed to your account with the provider, under the provider’s terms.
- Model output can be wrong. Check answers against their sources before you rely on them; combined answers link each claim to the tile it came from so you can.
Updates
Hominis updates itself in the background and applies each update the next time you restart it. What’s new describes every release.
