Connections and certificates

Certificates added by your organisation or security software

Why a site can be verified by a certificate authority that isn’t in Hominis’s built-in list.

Hominis ships with a list of trusted certificate authorities. Companies, schools and some security software add their own authority to macOS so they can inspect encrypted traffic on their network. Hominis also trusts those added authorities. To see which authority verified a site, click the site’s icon on the tile header to open the trust panel and choose Certificate details.

What it means for you

  • On a work or school Mac, this is usually expected, and whoever manages the Mac can read your encrypted traffic.
  • On your own Mac, check Keychain Access for certificates you don’t recognise, and check which security software you have installed.
